Hugh Withycombe, Viola, Australia 2004
This 16 1/2" viola by Hugh Withycombe is based on a personal model strongly influenced by the designs of Brescian school. The model has full arching and open C's facilitating a full, responsive sound. The choice of slab-cut maple for the back, quality tonewood for the top plate and intensely coloured oil varnish work with the design to deliver a successful, reliable instrument that is both easy to play and has the texture and strong core sound necessary for both solo and ensemble playing.
Hugh is a graduate of the Newark School of Violin Making in the UK. Following graduation, Hugh worked in London for a couple of years before returning to Australia to open his own workshop in Canberra. He regularly attends professional development courses at Oberlin in the USA and is the current President of the Australian Violin Makers Association. His instruments are played in Australia, Europe and the USA.
The viola is fitted up to our ‘Master’ standard and would be ideally suited to the advanced student, young professional or dedicated amateur player.
